The island of Nevis is located 2 miles southeast of St. Kitts. It's less touristy, hotels are on the higher end, and we found the beaches to be much nicer.
The cheapest way to get to there is by local water ferry from Basseterre. It leaves several times a day and the journey takes about 1 hour.
Where we stayed
For our visit, we stayed at the Montpelier Plantation and Beach hotel. It's a 20 minute taxi ride from Charlestown's ferry port. This gorgeous estate has a number of restaurants, a grand pool, and a 300 year old historic sugar mill used for private dining.
Montpelier has its own private beach but it's not near the hotel. Every morning at 10AM a van takes guests down to water. Since it was low season, our family had the beach mostly to ourselves. The van returns in the afternoon to take guests back to the hotel.
Places to Eat
If you ask a local where to eat, they'll tell you Sunshine's Beach Bar. Try the signature drink - The Killer Bee Rum Punch. With two you'll definitely sleep good at night.
Besides great food and drink, Sunshine's Beach Bar has a local play area for the kids. There's a swing set and giant trampoline right next to the beach.
Located further inland is another great restaurant, Bananas. Get there early, grab a cocktail, and head to the roof top deck. From there you can enjoy an amazing sunset.
Here's a great view from the deck!
Getting Back to St Kitts
For our return to St Kitts, we decided to take a private water taxi. It's a bit more expensive but super convenient. The crossing only takes a few minutes and you arrive in Cockelshell Bay. From there a private taxi will take you to the next destination.
