Exploring St Kitts

St. Kitts and Nevis is a two island country located in the West Indies. The islands were first settled by the British and French in the early 1600s. These world powers fought over the territory until 1713 when the British gained control. In 1983 St. Kitts and Nevis became independent.

Getting There

Getting to St. Kitts is quite easy. It's about a 3 hour flight from Miami. Just outside the airport you can easily catch a taxi to your place of stay. We went in June, which is the month between high tourism and hurricane seasons. During that time you won't find many tourists.

A Drive Around The Island

Basseterre, the capital of St. Kitts, is located close to the airport. The city has plenty of beautiful colonial buildings, restaurants, and shopping.

This obelisk, located close to Basseterre, is a war memorial to honor the men who died in the first and second World Wars.

A quarter of St Kitts is lush rain forest. If your looking for adventure, there's plenty of hiking and mountain biking.

The local famers market, located near the boat port in Basseterre, is open every Saturday.

If your into history, head over to Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you'll find many well preserved building on top of a large hill.

The Fortress contains a number of rooms with exhibits detailing its history. It's also a great place to play hide and seek with kids.

Sports

We were fortunate to catch the World Cup qualifier match between St. Kitts and El Salvador. It ended in a tie: 1 - 1.

Frigate Bay

The Shiggidy Shack is one of the best beach bar on a small sandy patch of beach along Frigate Bay known as "The Strip".

Our little guy had fun throwing rocks and shells into the water during sunset.

Here's a wonderful few of the sunset.

Useful Tips

1. You can pay for most things with US or East Caribbean Dollars. During our stay we only used US Dollars.

2. To recharge your gadgets, make sure to bring a travel adapter. Type G UK style plugs are used on the island.

3. One of the best beaches can be found at Cockelshell Bay. The waves are calm compared to other parts of the island. Here you'll also find two great places to eat, Reggae Beach Bar and Grill and the Spice Mill.

4. If your looking for a great breakfast, head over to Rituals cafe. It's only a 5 minute walk from the Marriott resort.

5.  During your stay, look for monkeys. We were told there are more monkeys on the island then people.
