San Marino is one of the world's oldest republics. It's 24 square miles in size and completely surrounded by Italy. We decided to take a trip down to this beautiful place during our vacation to Northern Italy.
It's a 3 hour drive from Verona to San Marino. Most of it journey is highway until you reach a set of small towns and rolling hills. There didn't seem to be a easy way to get there without driving through small curvy roads. In the distance, you can see San Marino.
We knew we were in the right place when we saw this sign. Even through San Marino is surrounded by Italy, the color and style of the signs is very different.
After a long and windy drive to the top, we reached the capital, City of San Marino. Our hotel was located in the historic quarter. Since there's no parking in the center, we needed to leave the car on the street, outside the main gate, and carry our bags to the hotel. You can buy a 2 day parking pass from the hotel which is easier then dealing with parking meters.
The old city quarter is made up of small streets an hills. The views from all around are stunning. There are tons of shops and restaurants to choose from.
Near the top, you can find the San Marino Cathedral.
The city walls in the historic quarter. We had a great time walking the paths along these walls.
During the day, there are a number of trails you can follow to reach look fortified towers hosting museums displaying historical artifacts of San Marino.
