Burg Frankenstein

Today we took a trip to Burg Frankenstein. This castle is located on a hilltop in the Hessen region of Germany. According to several sources, this is where author Mary Shelley found inspiration for her 1818 Gothic novel, Frankenstein.

Entrance to the castle grounds is a short walk from the parking area. The site is open all day and there's no entrance fee.

Once inside, your greeted by a large tower. The site is small and easy to explore with kids.

During our visit, the site was being setup for the annual Burg Frankenstein Halloween event.

After climbing the steps, you'll find great views of the entire area.

During our visit, author Walter Scheele provided us with a history lesson on the castle and surrounding region.

We received our lesson in the small chapel in the corner of the castle grounds. This chapel is still active and can be a unique place for a wedding.

Useful Tips:

1. After touring the site, head to the restaurant. The food was amazing. There is also a small snack stand next to the entrance.

2. If you enjoy hiking, you can get to Burg Frankenstein through a number of walking trails.
