Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay

Colonia del Sacramento was founded by the Portuguese in 1680. It's the oldest city in Uruguay and has been designated as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. It's a great place to wander, sample restaurants, and visit the shops.

A Walk Along the Historic Streets

The small cobblestone streets are really charming. There's a few Artisan stores along the way for shopping.

The Faro del Colonia del Sacramento (a.k.a lighthouse) is a great way to see the whole city. For anyone traveling with kids, they must be at least 8 years old to go up. It wasn't a good moment for our little guy.

During the summer time, you'll have the look really hard to find some shade.

At every corner, you'll find something unique.

Plaza Mayor

Plaza Mayor is the main square in the historic section. There's a great view of the lighthouse in the distance.

Lots of excavations happening right in the middle of town. Signs in the area describe what's being discovered and provide some history of the town.

Casa de Nacarello, 18th century historic Portuguese house.

Uruguay Wine Tasting

Buen Suspiro is a great little shop for purchasing wine, wine tasting, and enjoying a light meal.

The 2 Uruguay wines we tried were amazing!

Basillica del Santisimo Sacramento

Built by the Portuguese in 1808, this is the main church in the old section.

Inside it's very simply but pretty.

El Drugstore

Highly recommended restaurant in Colonia. It's very unique and has great evening entertainment! There's even a table inside an old car where you can enjoy a fun meal!

Rio de la Plata

Taking a stroll down the the river at sunset is a great way to end the visit. Just across the river you'll find Buenos Aires, Argentina.
